In times of turbulence, we want more than ever to be able to escape through the things that bring us comfort, joy, and allow us to express the emotions weighing on us. For some that's heading to the gym, going for a long walk, a bike ride, to play ball, etc. For dancers, that usually means heading into the studio for some stretching to fill the soul, easing tension through tapping, and finding gratitude from the self-expression released through contemporary movement and choreography. And in this situation we are currently in, where we are stuck at home, we feel like we are being robbed of that time. Robbed of our escape. But dancing was not cancelled. In fact, there has never been a better time to dance. We just have to be open to dancing in new surroundings. Do you have a living room, slide that coffee table out of the way and dance. Do you have a porch? Put on some sneakers and let's dance. Do you have a yard? Dancing in nature is grounding and relaxing. Your dance space at home does not need to be perfect. It does need to have mirrors like at the studio. You do not need a barre (if you have a counter top or a chair, that will do). It doesn't need a special/fancy floor. It just needs to be a space you feel safe and comfortable in. Here are things you can consider adding to your home dance space: > a wall of mirrors {to help you correct alignment and posture} > a portable dance barre {or have someone handy craft one for you from pvc pipe!} > a mat {to continue practicing your basic tumbling moves} > a turning disc {to practice balance for those turns} > a tap floor/board {or have one made for you from plywood like miss meg's below} I hope this helps you create the perfect and inspiring space for your dancer to continue dancing at home. Whether you have the accessories shared above, or just an open space in your kitchen matters not.... as long as you have the joy of dance in your heart, you can dance ANYWHERE.
Happy dancing everyone, With love, Miss Meg
